Tourmaline: Colour Variety and a Clear Buying Checklist

Understand tourmaline colours and how to compare multicoloured stones, product names and documented claims.

One family, many appearances

Tourmaline includes a broad range of colours. GIA describes multicoloured crystals as well as single-colour material and lists Mohs hardness around 7–7.5. The family name is therefore not a promise of one particular hue.

For any named variety or trade description, ask what is being claimed about the specific stone. A place-associated name should not be read as independent proof of geographical origin.

Inspect colour boundaries deliberately

For a multicoloured stone, our suggestion is to look at the transition between colours and how the cut presents it. Decide whether the pattern feels balanced in the finished setting.

Request a view of the actual item rather than a representative stock image. If two stones form earrings, look at them together: a colour combination can be attractive without being a close visual match.

Separate facts from adjectives

Record natural or laboratory-grown status where relevant, treatment disclosure and any laboratory conclusions supplied. Words such as “electric” or “vivid” do not substitute for these details.

Keep measurements beside weight. A long or deep cut may present differently from another stone with the same stated carat weight.

Fit the design to the wearer

For a ring, consider setting height and protection. For a pendant, check the total size and chain compatibility. Ask for care instructions that describe the actual jewellery rather than applying a rule for every tourmaline.

Tourmaline is associated with October in modern birthstone lists. Its colour range allows personal choice, but it does not justify unsupported healing or performance claims. A useful purchase record combines the specific identity, appearance and service information.
