Opal: Play-of-Colour, Body Colour and Clear Construction

Explore opal appearance and the questions that distinguish the material, the optical effect and the finished jewellery.

Understand the optical attraction

Opal is hydrated silica. In precious opal, ordered microscopic structures can produce shifting play-of-colour. GIA describes the pattern and intensity of this effect as important aspects of an opal's appeal.

Not every material described with an opalescent appearance is the same thing. Ask for the exact identity and construction instead of deciding from a rainbow flash in a photograph.

Inspect movement, not one frozen flash

Our practical suggestion is to request a slow video under a stated, ordinary light source. Look at how the pattern appears across the face and whether you enjoy it from normal viewing angles.

Also note the background or body colour and dimensions. A highly selective close-up may emphasize a momentary flash rather than the way the piece usually appears.

Ask what the item consists of

Confirm whether the stone is a single piece or an assembled construction, and request natural or manufactured status and treatment information. Do not infer these answers solely from the price.

Keep the seller's description and any laboratory information. A generic image of an opal variety is not documentation for the stone in your order.

Choose with care in mind

GIA lists Mohs hardness around 5–6.5. For a frequently worn ring, ask how the setting protects the opal and what particular care the construction requires.

Do not put an unfamiliar opal item through a generic jewellery-cleaning routine. Ask first, especially when layers, adhesives or treatments may be involved. October's birthstone association can guide a gift theme, but it should not override the wearer's willingness to maintain the actual piece.
