Is Silver Real? What Stamps, Magnets and Photos Cannot Prove

Understand the limits of home checks and prepare better questions for a professional assessment.

Begin with the evidence you have

A clear material description, a receipt and an identifiable seller are useful starting points. Photograph any marks without trying to deepen or alter them. Record what was promised: sterling throughout, silver plated, or another construction. This gives a jeweller something specific to investigate instead of an open-ended question based only on colour.

Do not overread a quick check

A photograph, a lack of visible tarnish or the result of a magnet experiment should not be treated as a complete assay. A check that raises a question is not the same as a test that resolves every possible construction. UK assay guidance explicitly notes that precious-metal content cannot be determined by sight or touch alone.

Avoid damage while investigating

Do not scratch through the surface, apply household chemicals or heat the piece to imitate a video demonstration. These actions can change the evidence and damage a finish. If a purchase is still within a return period, contact the seller before arranging a potentially destructive test or making any alteration to the item.

Ask what the assessment covers

When approaching a jeweller or testing service, explain the item’s construction if known and ask whether the proposed method examines only the surface or addresses the underlying material. Ask whether the process leaves a mark and what written result is available. The aim is a supported answer about this object, not a universal home trick for every silver-coloured item.

Common questions

Does a 925 stamp alone prove authenticity?

It is a material claim to investigate, not independent proof on its own.
