Sterling Silver vs Silver Plated: Identify the Base Metal

Understand the distinction between a silver alloy and a silver surface layer before comparing prices.

Start below the surface

Sterling silver identifies a silver alloy. Silver plated describes a layer of silver over a different underlying material. Both may look silver coloured in a photograph. The first buying question is therefore what the piece is made from underneath its visible surface, not how bright or white it appears under studio lighting.

An item can have more than one description

A sterling item may itself carry an additional finish. Do not assume that every mention of plating means the base is an inexpensive non-silver metal. Ask for a sentence that identifies both parts: the base material and the coating. If a description lists only colour or uses an unexplained premium label, request clarification before ordering.

Why cleaning advice differs

The Canadian Conservation Institute warns that polishing can wear away a thin silver coating. This makes it important to identify a plated surface before choosing a cleaning method. Advice for an uncoated object should not automatically be applied to a coated one. Avoid using an aggressive cleaning attempt as a way of discovering what the object is.

Make a fair price comparison

Compare an alloy piece with another alloy piece, and a plated piece with another clearly specified plated piece. Record dimensions, construction, finish and aftercare. If the seller provides no base-metal description, the comparison remains incomplete. Keep the written information so that the material you expected is documented independently of a photograph or an attractive product name.

Common questions

Can appearance prove that a chain is sterling?

No. Appearance alone does not establish the composition beneath the surface.
