Sapphire Beyond Blue: A Guide to Colour and Choice
Explore sapphire colours, why ruby belongs to the same mineral family, and how to compare a particular stone.
Blue is only the beginning
Sapphire is corundum in colours other than ruby red. GIA describes yellow, pink, green, violet and other colour varieties, as well as blue. A photograph of a blue stone therefore does not define the entire sapphire family.
Its Mohs hardness of 9 describes scratch resistance. It is one useful property, not a complete prediction of how a mounted stone will handle knocks or wear.
Keep colour comparisons consistent
For our comparison method, choose a similar size and inspect each candidate under the same light. Ask whether the video uses a spotlight that may exaggerate brightness. Look at the centre and edges as the stone turns.
Decide which hue you personally enjoy before treating an elaborate trade colour name as a reason to spend more. A name is not a substitute for seeing the actual stone.
Do not infer treatment or origin
Ask separately about natural or laboratory-grown status, treatments and any supported geographical-origin claim. A seller's place of business does not establish where the sapphire formed.
If a report is part of the offer, read what it states and what it does not. Match measurements and identifying information rather than relying on the word “certified.”
Think about the setting
Check whether you like the sapphire's appearance in the actual metal colour and design. Ask about the setting's condition, service options and care instructions for the whole item.
September's birthstone connection can be a meaningful starting point for a gift. It should sit alongside practical questions about fit and the recipient's preferences, not replace them.
