Gemstone Treatments: What to Ask Before Buying

Understand why formation, treatment, care and laboratory findings should be recorded separately in a gemstone purchase.

Treatment is not just cutting

GIA distinguishes routine shaping and polishing from processes used to change a gem's appearance or other properties. Examples include heating, dyeing, coatings and filling surface-reaching features. Their effects and care requirements are not identical.

Treat “treated” as the beginning of a more specific question. Ask what process is disclosed for the particular stone and what that means for wearing, cleaning or repair.

Natural does not mean untreated

A stone can form naturally and later receive treatment. A statement about natural formation should not be read as a separate claim that no enhancement occurred.

Similarly, a beautiful photograph does not establish treatment status. If the distinction matters to the purchase, request written information and discuss whether an independent laboratory service can address the relevant question.

Ask for usable instructions

Our recommendation is to request three practical answers: what is known, what care changes and what a future repairer needs to know. Keep those answers with the receipt and any report.

Do not use a home heating or chemical experiment to see whether a treatment disappears. A destructive result does not create a reliable identification service, and an unchanged result does not prove absence of treatment.

Compare like with like

When two prices differ, check whether the stones have the same identity, size, treatment description and documentation. Do not attribute every difference to one attractive colour name.

Read laboratory wording carefully. “No indications” or another stated conclusion should be interpreted within the report's scope, not expanded into a universal guarantee. A seller should help you understand the actual item without promising that every treatment can always be detected in every circumstance.
