Moonstone: Adularescence and a Realistic View
Explore moonstone’s moving light effect and learn why viewing angle, material description and setting matter.
Understand the glow
Moonstone belongs to the feldspar group. GIA describes adularescence, a moving light effect associated with its internal structure, and lists Mohs hardness around 6–6.5.
The effect is not the same thing as opal's play-of-colour. A luminous photograph can be appealing without independently identifying the material.
Ask for a moving view
Our practical suggestion is to request a slow video showing the stone from several angles. Notice where the glow appears and whether you enjoy how the piece looks when that effect is less prominent.
Compare similar lighting conditions. A spotlighted photograph may capture a particularly strong moment rather than what you will see during ordinary wear.
Read names carefully
If a seller uses a trade name containing “moonstone,” ask for the mineral identification and any treatment information. A familiar commercial label can be less precise than the material information you need for care.
Keep actual dimensions beside the photograph. A high dome or broad cabochon can give a different wearing experience from the impression created by a face-up image.
Consider the complete setting
For a ring, ask about how the edges and surface are protected and how the item should be maintained. Do not use hardness alone to choose a machine or chemical cleaner.
Moonstone is one of the modern June birthstone options. That association can make the design personally meaningful, but it does not imply therapeutic effects. Buy the actual appearance and documented material, not a promise that every stone will glow equally in every room.
