Lapis Lazuli: A Blue Rock, Not a Single Crystal
Learn what lapis lazuli is and how to compare its surface pattern, colour and jewellery construction.
A rock made of minerals
Lapis lazuli is a rock rather than one single mineral crystal. GIA describes a blue material that can include other minerals, producing varied appearances. This is a different kind of material description from a single-crystal gem such as sapphire.
Blue colour alone does not identify lapis. Ask for the underlying material and any treatment description in the actual listing.
Compare the pattern you will receive
Our practical suggestion is to inspect photographs of the exact cabochon, beads or carving. Decide whether you like a relatively even field of blue or a more visibly varied pattern.
Do not treat every bright speck or pale patch as a universal quality score. Evaluate the complete object, including polish, craftsmanship and how the pattern works within the design.
Ask about colour processing
Request disclosure of treatments and an explanation of any unusual trade terminology. A naturally occurring material can still have been processed to alter its appearance.
For a set of earrings or beads, look at the actual pieces together. Matching dimensions do not guarantee that the visual patterns or shades match.
Keep care material-specific
Lapis has different physical properties from diamond or corundum. GIA's overview gives a Mohs range around 5–6. That number does not authorize an abrasive cleaning test or a one-size-fits-all machine-cleaning routine.
Ask what is appropriate for the stone, any treatment and the mounting. Keep the answer with your purchase details. If you want to match a pendant to existing jewellery, prioritize an honest description and usable scale references over an exotic-sounding origin story that is not documented.
