Jade: Why Jadeite and Nephrite Need Clear Names
Learn the main materials called jade and how to separate species, treatment and appearance in a buying conversation.
Jade is not one simple colour label
GIA explains that jade commonly refers to jadeite and nephrite. They are different gem materials. The name does not mean every piece is green or that every green carved object is jade.
Ask the seller which material is being offered. If the description stops at “jade colour,” you still need an answer about the underlying substance.
Look at the actual carving or jewellery
Our suggestion is to inspect the complete object under ordinary light, including edges, drilled holes and areas that are less visible in a front photograph. Decide whether you enjoy the colour, translucency and craftsmanship together.
For a bangle, fit is particularly important because the opening must work for the wearer. Confirm internal dimensions and the seller's fitting guidance rather than borrowing a bracelet length from a chain design.
Discuss treatment explicitly
Request a plain-language description of any treatment and supporting documentation where relevant. Do not infer untreated status from an antique-looking style, a cultural motif or a high price.
A natural-material claim and an absence-of-treatment claim are separate. Ask what the seller means by each and what an independent report establishes about the particular item.
Avoid destructive home tests
Do not scratch, heat or strike a piece to settle an identity question. Those actions can cause damage without producing a reliable consumer assessment.
For a consequential purchase, discuss identification with an appropriately qualified professional. Keep records of material, treatments, dimensions and any report. Jade's cultural significance can add personal meaning without making every origin, age or value claim self-verifying.
