Diamond Basics: The 4Cs Are a Starting Point

Separate diamond identity, quality, weight and dimensions before comparing a piece of diamond jewellery.

Start with identity

Diamond is crystalline carbon. Natural and laboratory-grown diamond must be described clearly; a diamond simulant is a different material. A bright or colourless photograph does not independently establish any of those identities.

Ask which description applies to the actual stone being sold. The answer should appear in the written listing and purchase record, not only in a sales conversation.

Read the 4Cs together

GIA's 4Cs are colour, clarity, cut and carat weight. They organize important diamond-quality information, but no single entry is a complete description of how a finished item looks.

For our visual comparison, inspect the actual stone under ordinary lighting and note its millimetre dimensions. Carat is a weight measurement, not a direct statement of face-up size.

Match documentation to the stone

Ask which laboratory issued a report, what information it covers and how its identifiers correspond to the offered item. Distinguish a laboratory report from a monetary appraisal and from the seller's own guarantee.

Keep a copy of the listing, invoice and report. Do not assume a generic document shown beside a product photograph necessarily describes that exact stone.

Hard does not mean unbreakable

Diamond ranks 10 on the Mohs scale. That high scratch resistance does not mean every edge or setting is immune to damage. Ask for appropriate wearing and cleaning advice for the particular piece.

Choose a total budget and a design before allowing a small numerical difference to dominate the purchase. This introductory guide does not establish resale values or promise investment performance. April's birthstone connection may guide a gift, but it does not replace an informed comparison.
