Carat Weight vs Gemstone Size: Read Both Measurements
Understand metric carats, millimetre dimensions and why equal weight does not guarantee equal visual size.
| Gem weight | Mass |
|---|---|
| 0.25 ct | 0.05 g |
| 0.50 ct | 0.10 g |
| 1.00 ct | 0.20 g |
| 2.00 ct | 0.40 g |
Carat measures mass
One metric carat equals 0.2 grams. It is a gemstone-weight unit, not the same concept as the karat description of a gold alloy. A listing should make clear which measurement is being discussed.
For example, a 1.00 ct stone weighs 0.20 g. That conversion does not tell you its diameter, its colour or whether it is natural.
Dimensions describe the footprint
Ask for length, width and depth in millimetres. For a pendant, also request the dimensions of the finished item, because a stone's measurements do not include the entire mounting or bail.
Our comparison method is to draw the face-up length and width on paper at actual size. Use it as a scale reference, not a reconstruction of how a faceted stone will handle light.
Shape and material affect presentation
Different proportions and materials can produce different appearances at equal carat weight. A deeper stone may carry more of its mass below the face-up outline. Do not assume a weight match guarantees a matching visible size.
When replacing or matching a stone, consult a jeweller about the setting dimensions rather than ordering solely by carat weight.
Keep quantities unambiguous
Ask whether a quoted weight refers to one centre stone or the total of several stones. The same headline number can describe quite different designs if that distinction is unclear.
For online shopping, save dimensions, individual or total weight, and a view with a scale reference. Price and quality still require their own comparison; this guide does not supply a universal price-per-carat formula or a guarantee that a larger stone is a better choice.
