Amethyst: A Guide to Purple Quartz
Compare amethyst colour and proportions while keeping material identity separate from crystal folklore.
Purple quartz, not a mystical diagnosis
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, with Mohs hardness 7. GIA identifies it as February's birthstone and describes a range of purple tones. Those material facts are separate from historical stories about powers or protection.
This guide makes no health or therapeutic claims for amethyst. Choose it for colour, design, meaning or collecting interest rather than as a treatment for a medical condition.
Look at colour distribution
GIA discusses visible colour zoning as part of amethyst quality. Our practical suggestion is to look across the whole face of a stone, not only its darkest corner. Ask for a neutral-light view rather than judging from a heavily saturated photograph.
An intentionally pale colour can still suit your preferences. Decide whether you like the complete piece instead of treating darker as an automatic improvement.
Compare proportions as well as weight
Note millimetre dimensions and how the cut presents the colour. A deep stone can carry weight without creating the face-up presence you expected. Consider the height of its setting if choosing a ring.
Ask for natural or laboratory-grown status and any treatment information supplied for the particular stone. A modest price does not prove identity, and a dramatic colour does not prove rarity.
Build a practical purchase checklist
For earrings, compare the pair's appearance under the same lighting. For a pendant, check the bail and chain independently of the stone.
Keep the material description and care instructions together. If the stone or setting changes appearance, ask a jeweller before experimenting with cleaning. An attractive everyday design should come with usable information, not just a memorable colour name.
