Topaz: More Than a Blue or November Stone

Understand topaz colours, why hardness is not the whole durability story, and what to ask about a finished piece.

Topaz is its own mineral

Topaz occurs in several colours. GIA lists Mohs hardness 8 and discusses colour as an important part of its appeal. A yellow stone is not automatically topaz, and a blue stone is not automatically aquamarine.

When comparing listings, ask for the actual material and any treatment description. A colour term or birthstone theme cannot replace identity information.

Ask about colour and surface

Before choosing a particular shade, ask how the seller describes its treatment status and whether a surface finish needs special care. Do not assume every colour sold under the topaz name was obtained in the same way.

Our practical suggestion is to compare ordinary-light photographs of the exact items. Keep the background and scale consistent so that an enlarged thumbnail does not dominate your judgement.

Do not rank wearability by one number

A hardness number describes scratching, not every kind of mechanical risk. For a ring, discuss how the setting protects the stone and whether its height suits your activities.

Look at the edges and corners in product photographs. Ask about inspection or repair if there is visible damage rather than treating a high hardness number as reassurance about a particular stone's condition.

Record the whole purchase

Note stone dimensions, construction, metal and any chain included. Ask for cleaning instructions before using an ultrasonic device or a chemical product on an unfamiliar piece.

Topaz and citrine are modern November birthstone options, but they are different minerals. Choose the one whose colour, design and care requirements suit the wearer. A clear specification will be more useful later than a generic claim that every November stone behaves alike.
