Spinel: A Distinct Gem, Not Another Name for Ruby

Discover spinel colours and why a red stone, a natural spinel and a synthetic imitation need precise descriptions.

Give spinel its own identity

Spinel is its own mineral, not a variety of ruby. GIA describes a range that includes red, pink, blue and other colours and lists Mohs hardness 8. Colour overlap with another gem does not make the materials interchangeable.

Ask for the material name and whether the particular stone is natural or laboratory-grown. A manufactured spinel used to imitate another gem needs a different description from natural spinel sold under its own name.

Compare more than the red

Our suggestion is to evaluate the stone's appearance while it moves, with the centre and edges visible. Decide whether you like the tone and cut instead of comparing a ruby photograph with a spinel photograph taken in different lighting.

For earrings, request a photograph of the actual pair together. A matching size does not by itself promise matching colour.

Request clear supporting information

If natural origin or absence of treatment forms part of the sales claim, ask how it is documented. Do not assume every stone in a mineral family shares the same history.

An independent report may answer identity questions, but read its scope. It is not a replacement for the seller's written description of the complete piece, including metal and mounting.

Choose for use and enjoyment

Consider how the stone is protected and how the jewellery fits. Ask for item-specific care information rather than using hardness alone to select a cleaning method.

Spinel appears among modern August birthstone options. That association can be meaningful without diminishing its identity as a gem in its own right. Avoid purchasing it only as a supposed shortcut to owning a different material.
