Scratches on Silver Jewellery: Cleaning or Refinishing?
Know which questions to ask before trying to remove a mark from a silver surface.
Identify the problem first
A dull area, a surface deposit, a scratch and a damaged coating are different problems. Describe what you see and when it appeared rather than assuming that every visible mark is dirt. Photograph it in consistent light. If a link is bent or a clasp does not close properly, stop wearing the piece until it is assessed.
Cleaning is not the same request
Cleaning aims to remove unwanted deposits; refinishing changes the surface appearance. Before asking a jeweller to make a piece look new, explain whether you want to preserve a brushed texture, dark recesses or an engraving. A bright finish across every surface may be a different result from the design you originally selected.
Why aggressive polishing is a poor shortcut
The Canadian Conservation Institute explains that polishing removes some underlying metal as well as tarnish. Repeated attempts to erase every line can therefore have consequences, especially on coatings and detailed areas. Do not assume that pressing harder or using a stronger household abrasive is a safe route to a better result.
Make the repair brief specific
Ask what can realistically be improved, what must remain and whether the work would affect dimensions, texture or coating. For a small decorative mark, leaving it alone may be an option worth discussing. Agree on the scope and estimate before authorising work. This is a conversation about your particular object, not a guarantee that every scratch can disappear.
Common questions
Will silver polish repair a bent link?
No. A structural problem needs assessment rather than surface polishing.
