Solid vs Hollow Silver Chains: Construction Matters

Separate silver purity from chain construction when comparing similar-looking necklaces.

Two separate specifications

Sterling tells you about the silver alloy; solid-section or hollow describes how a component is constructed. Those are different questions. A chain can be described as sterling without that sentence fully explaining the internal construction of its links. Ask for construction information directly when it affects your purchase decision.

Width does not tell the whole story

Two necklaces can have the same advertised width yet differ in link shape, construction and weight. Do not assume the larger-looking photograph represents more metal. Ask for length, width, approximate weight if available and a clear construction description. Compare the same length before interpreting a weight difference between two products.

Think about use and handling

Explain whether you want to wear the chain alone or with a pendant. Ask the seller whether that exact combination is suitable, including the end fittings and pendant opening. Avoid treating a width number or a solid label as an unrestricted load rating. A useful recommendation should concern the finished chain and intended pendant together.

Ask about repair before purchase

Repair options should be discussed for the specific link design and construction. If an item becomes crushed, kinked or difficult to fasten, do not try to straighten it through repeated pulling. Ask a jeweller to assess it. Keep the original specification, since knowing how the chain was made can make that assessment more focused.

Common questions

Does 925 tell me whether a chain is hollow?

No. Ask separately about the construction of the links.
