Peridot: Understanding Its Yellow-Green Character

Meet the gem variety of olivine and compare peridot by actual colour, dimensions and jewellery design.

Recognize the mineral identity

Peridot is the gem variety of olivine. GIA describes its yellow-green colour and lists Mohs hardness around 6.5–7. It is a different material from emerald, even though both can appear green in jewellery.

A seller's colour description should accompany the material name. Ask for identification information if the distinction matters rather than trying to settle it from a screen.

Judge the shade in ordinary light

Our suggestion is to compare the exact stones against a neutral background and on the intended wearer when possible. A pale yellow-green may give a different effect beside different metal colours.

Look at the whole face as the stone turns. Decide whether the colour and cut suit your preferences rather than assuming that the deepest-looking photograph is necessarily the best purchase.

Account for real-world wear

Ask about the setting and the specific piece's care requirements. Hardness is not a complete account of how an item handles impact, and a high-setting ring creates different practical questions from an earring.

If the necklace will be layered, check how the pendant moves against adjacent pieces. The goal is to understand the intended use, not to perform a home toughness test.

Make the gift information clear

Peridot is one of the modern birthstones associated with August. Birthstone options can vary by tradition, so use the connection as an invitation to choose a colour rather than a rule about what someone must wear.

Keep the product's material description, measurements and any supplied report. A geological story about peridot does not establish the origin of an individual stone. Ask separately if origin is part of the seller's claim.
