18 vs 20 Inch Necklace: A Fit-First Guide
Compare 18-inch and 20-inch necklaces with exact centimetre conversions and a simple way to test placement before ordering.
| Listed length | Centimetres |
|---|---|
| 16 inches | 40.64 cm |
| 18 inches | 45.72 cm |
| 20 inches | 50.80 cm |
| 22 inches | 55.88 cm |
The difference in numbers
An 18-inch necklace measures 45.72 cm; a 20-inch necklace measures 50.80 cm. The difference is 5.08 cm of total chain length. It does not mean the pendant will sit exactly 5.08 cm lower on your chest.
Where a necklace rests depends on neck size, body proportions, the way the chain drapes and any pendant. Treat model photographs as styling references, not a personalized fit guarantee.
Make a harmless length mock-up
Use a soft measuring tape, or measure a non-stretch cord against a ruler. Hold the ends together at the intended necklace length without tying the cord around your neck. Look in a mirror while wearing the neckline you plan to pair with the necklace.
Compare both lengths from the same starting point. If you plan to wear a pendant, account for the pendant's own drop rather than looking only at the chain line. A chain you already own can be an even more useful reference.
Check how the seller measures
Ask whether the stated length includes the clasp and whether an extender is included. An adjustable chain may list a range rather than one length. Also check whether the pictured pendant comes with the chain at all.
Write your preference in centimetres as well as inches. This makes it easier to compare listings and helps avoid confusing the chain length with the overall drop of the finished necklace.
Choose for your actual wardrobe
An 18-inch option may be your closer-fitting choice; 20 inches gives more total length. Neither is automatically the correct length for everyone. Test both with a crew neck, an open collar or whichever clothing you wear most often.
For a gift, ask discreetly about an existing favourite necklace. If fit remains uncertain, look for clearly stated adjustment and return options rather than assuming a “standard” necklace will suit every recipient.
Common questions
Will 20 inches sit two inches lower than 18 inches?
Not necessarily. Two inches is the difference in total necklace length; the change in vertical drop depends on how it drapes.
