Argentium Silver: What to Ask About 940 and 960

A buyer’s introduction to branded silver alloys, their stated grades and product-specific care.

A named alloy family

Argentium is a branded silver alloy family. Its current technical resources describe 940 and 960 grades, corresponding to 94% and 96% silver. If a listing simply says premium silver, that is not enough to identify it as Argentium. Ask for the actual alloy designation rather than interpreting a general adjective as a material specification.

Read performance claims carefully

The manufacturer describes these grades as highly tarnish resistant. That wording should not be expanded into a promise that any finished item will remain unchanged forever. The finished piece, its treatment and the supplied care instructions matter. A useful question is what the seller recommends for this particular item, rather than how long a marketing phrase sounds.

Check the whole specification

Ask which grade is used and whether the item has a coating or deliberately coloured surface. Then check ordinary buying details: size, chain construction, fastening and return terms. A specialist alloy does not remove the need for a usable clasp or a length that fits. Compare finished pieces, rather than treating the branded material as the entire product.

Keep educational information separate

The manufacturer’s workshop resources include fabrication and finishing procedures. They are not instructions for a customer to heat-treat or chemically alter jewellery at home. For cleaning or repair, use the seller’s guidance or consult a jeweller familiar with the alloy. This article describes an alloy family and does not indicate that every silver item in a shop uses it.

Common questions

Does all sterling silver count as Argentium?

No. Ask for explicit identification of the branded alloy and grade.
