Amber: Fossil Resin, Inclusions and Care Questions

Understand amber as an organic gem material and approach inclusions, descriptions and jewellery use without destructive home tests.

Not every gem is a mineral crystal

Amber is fossilized resin, an organic gem material. GIA lists its Mohs hardness around 2–2.5. It therefore belongs in a different material conversation from hard crystalline gems.

Ask what the piece consists of rather than treating a warm colour as proof of identity. A resin-looking object in a photograph does not independently establish amber or its age.

Treat inclusion stories carefully

GIA describes plant and animal inclusions as part of amber's interest. A visible insect, however, is not by itself a professional finding about authenticity, geological age or scientific significance.

Our suggestion is to ask what documentation supports an important inclusion claim. If the story drives a large part of the price, make sure the evidence is more specific than an attractive close-up.

Inspect construction and condition

Look at the actual pendant, beads or carving. Check dimensions, attachments and any reported processing or treatment. A lightweight-looking item still needs secure jewellery connections.

Do not use a hot needle, flame, solvent or scratch test as a consumer authentication method. Such tests can damage the piece and need not answer the underlying question reliably.

Plan a gentle ownership routine

Request care instructions for the specific amber and setting. Do not apply a polishing process intended for plain silver or use machine cleaning merely because the metal mounting tolerates it.

For collecting or gifting, choose an item whose appearance and documentation you understand. No medical benefits are claimed here for wearing amber. Historical interest and personal meaning can be appreciated without presenting them as treatment evidence.
