Alexandrite: Understanding Colour Change
Learn what colour change means in alexandrite and how to request a meaningful demonstration rather than a dramatic edited image.

Alexandrite is a colour-change variety of chrysoberyl. GIA describes different appearances under different light sources and lists Mohs hardness 8.5. A stone that changes colour is not automatically alexandrite.
Ask for the material identity and whether the item is natural, laboratory-grown or an imitation. These distinctions should remain visible in the written purchase information.
Request a controlled demonstration
Our practical suggestion is to ask for a video of the same stone moved between clearly identified light sources, with no unexplained edits. Include ordinary viewing conditions rather than relying only on an unusually dramatic display.
Look at how much you enjoy both appearances. The most appealing colour-change photograph is not necessarily the design you will prefer in your own rooms.
Separate appearance from provenance
An origin claim needs appropriate support; it cannot be settled by the colours in a sales image. Likewise, a rare-sounding variety name is not an appraisal or a promise of future value.
For a substantial purchase, discuss independent identification and read the report's exact findings. Match the dimensions and identifiers to the offered stone.
Choose a wearable item
Check the setting, size and condition as well as the optical effect. Ask for care guidance covering the specific material, any treatment and the mounting.
Alexandrite is one of the modern June birthstone options. It can provide a distinctive gift theme, but do not let a sense of urgency replace ordinary purchase checks. Keep the seller's explanation of lighting and identity with the order record.
